Hi! My name is Mickey Mouse! You know, the mouse of the hour Walt Disney made me. Gosh, I’ve always had fun with Walt throughout the years we’ve spent together, but I think I’ve had the most fun when Walt had me star in my first feature length movie “Fantasia!”

I remember way back when Walt was planning a new film for the studio. He noticed that Donald Duck was growing more popular and I was… well, not. He wanted to put me in this new film that would then boost up my popularity, but then it occurred to him. What if he could bring together the actions of a cartoon with classical music? It was brilliant! Originally they were going to call it “The Concert Feature,” but in the end they decided to name it Fantasia. Walt Disney told me the plans as soon as possible and I got excited! Plus, I was going to work alongside with a partner for this cartoon feature! Who was it going to be? Goofy? The Big Bad Wolf? A Silly Symphony character? Nope, someone far different than all the rest of Walt’s creations. That was when I met him.

That day Walt brought me into his office when someone else was already in there. It was an elderly man and gosh, was he tall or what; taller than the door! He had a long gray beard, he was bald, big hands, and he had the same animated eyebrow as Walt did. I figured out later that the Disney animators made him as a tribute to Walt. I didn’t really know what to say.

“Mickey, this is Yen Sid.” said Walt, “He’s going to star in the Sorcerer’s Apprentice sequence with you as the master sorcerer.”

“How do you do, Mickey?” said Yen Sid.

I froze. I clearly didn’t know what to say. I kept concentrating at Yen Sid’s looks and height. I was completely intimidated by it; it was like looking at Walt getting mad only he was much older and fierce looking. I hid behind Walt’s leg like a scared child.

“Is he alright, Walt?” Yen Sid asked.

“He’s fine. He’s just a little shy with new people. Let me handle this.” Walt turned to me and said, “Now listen Mickey. Yen Sid doesn’t mean any harm. He just wants to be friends with you, that’s all.”

“But he scares me!” I whispered to him.

“You were scared of me when I first made you, right?”

I  nodded.

“Well Yen Sid shouldn’t be any different. I only ask if you can treat him with as much respect as give to everyone else and all will be good. Okay?”

“Okay.” I said.

“Good boy. Now I want you to shake hands with Yen Sid and then we will start with the Sorcerer’s Apprentice immediately.”

Yen Sid held out his hand ready to grasp mine. I reluctantly reached out my hand and took his. His large hand completely covered my hand; he held it firm but surprisingly it felt gentle. Despite that, I quickly pulled my hand back with fear written all over my face and ran out of the office!

“Mickey!” I heard Walt shout, “Come back!” Walt turned back to Yen Sid and said, “I’m so sorry this happened. I’ve never seen Mickey react this way to anyone.”

“It’s quite alright, Walt.” Yen Sid spoke, “This relationship will take some getting used to.”

“For all our sakes I hope so, too.”

Eventually, I came back to the set where Walt and some of his best animators and storyboard men were planning how the Sorcerer's Apprentice story will be told. But as I was about to enter the room, I found Yen Sid coming towards me. I hid behind a wall until he was close enough to the door. Suddenly I thought about what Walt said meeting new people. What if Yen Sid wasn’t all that bad? I took a deep breath and walked up to him.

“Yen Sid?”

“Oh, hello Mickey.”

“Listen, uhh… I didn’t mean to be rude back at the office. It’s just that I’ve never met anyone who, well… has all these features.”

“Features?” Yen Sid wondered.

“I’m sorry, but your big hands, the long beard, and the sorta mean look you have on your face. I couldn’t help myself; I was so scared I froze and I didn’t know what to do and-”

“Mickey!” Yen Sid interrupted.

“Yes sir?”

Yen Sid knelt down, put one of his large hands on my shoulder and said, “I understand where you are coming from. Yes, I may look intimidating on the outside but in my heart, like Walt and many other people you know, I am good. Now let me be frank to you. I too was shocked at the sight that I was going to take partnership with a mouse. It is very unlikely in the modern world, but then I learned that we are what we are and who we are. So I decided to set my differences aside and make the best of what is to come.”

I looked down at the floor and thought deeply in my mind of everything Yen Sid just told me. He sounded like as if it was really Walt Disney talking to me; it felt like they were the same.

“Do you…do you wanna start over?” I asked him.

“I would like that very much.” Yen Sid agreed.

We shook hands once more only this time I didn’t pull my hand back. I was no longer scared of my new friend!

“Mickey Mouse.” I said.

“Yen Sid.” he said.

We both went inside the room and joined up with Walt and the other artists for the Sorcerer’s Apprentice sequence. Walt was happy when he saw the both of us getting along well and eventually the cartoon was finished in time for it to join the rest of the other symphonies in the theaters. It didn’t get much money out of due to World War II, but I had fun with Yen Sid, Walt, the artists and the other actors. That was all that mattered.
Here is my submission to the Disney-By-Eras contest. Mickey Mouse narrates the story of how he and Yen Sid, the Sorcerer from Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 first began working together for the Sorcerer's Apprentice cartoon in the late 1930's. This writing goes under the Original Classics 1937-1942 Disney-By-Eras   I hope you all enjoy this and vote for this piece to win! Happy reading!Reading
